PREP ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Upsets Edison in Cross-Country
Unranked Fountain Valley defeated Edison, 26-30, in a Sunset League girls’ cross-country meet Thursday at Edison High. It was only the second dual-meet loss in seven years for Edison, ranked second in the Southern Section Division II poll.
Angie Winkler won the three-mile race in 17 minutes 45 seconds for Fountain Valley (2-0, 1-0 in league), which defeated Edison for the first time since 1981, Baron Coach Dan Moran said.
Sophomore Jennifer Giffel (19:13) finished third for Edison (0-1 in league).
In another Sunset League meet:
Huntington Beach 17, Marina 40--Huntington Beach’s Jennifer Spahr finished nearly two minutes ahead of the field at Central Park East, running the three-mile course in 18:38.
Los Alamitos 27, Esperanza 28--Esperanza’s Kristin Hawking won the three-mile race at Yorba Regional Park in 18:07, but the second-ranked Griffins still edged the third-ranked Aztecs. Kim Bates (18:23) finished second for Esperanza.
In the Century League:
El Modena 24, Santa Ana Valley 34--Jessica Dahlberg and Leslie Burton tied for first place with a time of 18:17 on the three-mile course at Irvine Park for top-ranked El Modena (1-0).
In Century League boys’ cross-country:
El Modena 21, Santa Ana Valley 34--Although Santa Ana Valley’s Luis Estrada won the three-mile race at Irvine Park in 15:13, the Vanguards (1-0), ranked sixth in the county, took second through fifth place to beat the eighth-ranked Falcons (0-1).
El Modena’s Ryan Emenaker finished second in 15:23.
In the Golden West League:
Santa Ana sweeps--Wencelasdo Morales and Danny Rivero tied for first in the three-mile race at Irvine Park for No. 2 Santa Ana (2-0 in league), which defeated Saddleback, 16-39, and Servite, 15-47. Saddleback defeated Servite, 19-36.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Huntington Beach 3, Newport Harbor 1--Top-ranked Huntington Beach lost its first game against No. 3 Newport Harbor, 8-15, but rebounded to take the next three, 15-7, 15-12, 16-14. Melissa Wendt had a match-high 30 kills for Huntington Beach (4-0).
Mater Dei 3, Laguna Beach 1--Roberta Gehlke had 35 kills in the 15-9, 15-7, 12-15, 15-11 victory for second-ranked Mater Dei (3-0). No. 7 Laguna Beach is 1-2.
