COMMISSIONS: Forty-two American composers and five librettists will benefit from the latest round of grants just announced by the ongoing Meet the Composer/Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest commissioning program. Funded projects cover a wide variety of musical interests and genres. Consider a few California organizations:

Long Beach Opera, along with three other presenters nationwide, will receive an opera from composer Stewart Wallace and librettist Michael Korie, the work to be called "Hopper's Wife," and dealing with an imaginary marriage between painter Edward Hopper and Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State Los Angeles joins six other U.S. presenters in giving premiere performances to a new work by Chicago composer Corky Siegel.

California E.A.R. Unit will be the recipient of works by composers Wadada Leo Smith, Larry Ochs and George Edwards.

The Beverly Hills-based vocal ensemble La Vie will share three works, from composers Brent Michael Davids, Paul Schoenfield and Steven Stucky.

Cabrillo Music Festival, along with presenters in Houston, Washington, D.C., New York, Cincinnati and Aspen, will receive a 25-minute work for piano and chamber ensemble written by George Tsontakis.
