COMMISSIONS: Forty-two American composers and five librettists will benefit from the latest round of grants just announced by the ongoing Meet the Composer/Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest commissioning program. Funded projects cover a wide variety of musical interests and genres. Consider a few California organizations:

Long Beach Opera, along with three other presenters nationwide, will receive an opera from composer Stewart Wallace and librettist Michael Korie, the work to be called “Hopper’s Wife,” and dealing with an imaginary marriage between painter Edward Hopper and Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State Los Angeles joins six other U.S. presenters in giving premiere performances to a new work by Chicago composer Corky Siegel.
