Two Orange County companies have received contracts to operate the Air Force’s first privatized equipment repair and maintenance facility.

Rockwell International Corp. has received a $264-million contract to take over missile guidance system repair and maintenance work at Ohio’s Newark Air Force Base as the Air Force turns it into a privately managed facility. The Air Force also awarded Irvine-based Wyle Electronics a $19-million contract to take over meteorology activities at the Ohio base.

Federal contract--Wyle Laboratories Inc. in El Segundo has been awarded a federal contract to take over meteorology activities at an Ohio Air Force base. The Times on Monday named the wrong company.

The Air Force expects about 1,000 of the 1,400 workers at the repair facility to remain employed because the facility won’t be shut down. Newark was scheduled for closure by the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

Under the new plans, however, facilities on the 70-acre base will be turned over to a local redevelopment group. Rockwell and Wyle will lease what they need from that group.
