Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald was named the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Award as the defensive player of the year by the Football Writers Assn. of America. Fitzgerald, the Big Ten leader in tackles, will not play in the Rose Bowl because he broke bones in his leg and foot on Nov. 11.
