A 26-year-old man was shot in the leg early Saturday when a car pulled up to him and a gunman opened fire, authorities said.

Robert Maurice Hargis was warming up his car about 2 a.m., preparing to take his mother to work at a nearby hospital, when the gunman drove up and fired three shots from a 9-millimeter handgun, Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Brown said.

Hargis was hit in the thigh by the first shot, but dived to the floor to escape the other two shots, Brown said. Hargis was treated at West Anaheim Medical Center. His mother had not yet entered the car, which was parked in front of their home on Antigua Street in an unincorporated area near Anaheim.
