San Gabriel Valley : No Hearing Needed on Freeway Extension, Panel Says
Caltrans’ new plan to shift part of the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension west to avoid a historic El Sereno neighborhood but demolish dozens of previously untargeted homes will not warrant a special public hearing before the California Transportation Commission, a commission official said Tuesday.
Instead, Peter Hathaway, chief deputy director, said the commission will consider giving state approval to the shift as a regular agenda item and that he does not believe it will require new environmental studies.
In November 1994, commissioners gave state approval to a route through Pasadena, South Pasadena and El Sereno after a daylong special public hearing in Pasadena. That route did not include Caltrans’ new plan to move a three-quarter-mile stretch up to 400 feet to the west that will save 154 dwellings from being knocked down but target 88 other houses for demolition.
South Pasadena officials said they have not decided how to respond to the commission’s decision.
