Santa Monica College trustees have approved spending $8.8 million for a satellite campus that is expected to house the college’s entertainment industry classes and classes in related technology fields.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday to approve the purchase of the 3.4-acre Santa Monica site, currently home of the Gemological Institute of America. The site includes a two-story, 53,000-square-foot building with about 25 classrooms and laboratories, a library, a bookstore and offices.

The new campus at 1660 Stewart St. is scheduled to open in fall 1997 and will accommodate about 1,000 students, college officials said.

The purchase was funded by a 1992 city bond measure earmarked for modernization and safety improvements on the college campus.
