From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The huge Popocatepetl volcano erupted for the first time in about a year, belching clouds of ash and sulfur into the air but causing no damage, scientists said. A television news helicopter flew to the vicinity of the 17,887-foot peak and beamed live pictures of the eruption to Mexico City, 39 miles to the northwest. Randy White, a specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey who visited the mountain last summer, said Mexican and American scientists who have been monitoring the volcano believe that periodic eruptions may last from one to four years.
