Northridge : CSUN Tax Assistance Program Wins Award

Share

For 25 years, student volunteers from Cal State Northridge have assisted the needy with their tax returns. This afternoon, the university will receive an official thank you from Vice President Al Gore.

At 1 p.m., Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Margaret Milner Richardson will present the Hammer Award to CSUN’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), a student organization that provides free tax assistance each year to low-income individuals and families, senior citizens, the hearing-impaired and non-English-speaking individuals.

“We have one of the largest programs in the nation,” said Catherine Jeppson, an accounting professor and VITA’s faculty advisor since 1979. “The need is great for our services.”

The Hammer Award, created by Gore, recognizes efficiency in government and is part of the Clinton Administration’s National Performance Review program. The actual award is an inexpensive hammer mounted on a plaque with the words, “Thanks for building a government that works better and costs less.”

VITA volunteers will offer free tax assistance until April 14 at 16 locations citywide. For information, call (818) 885-4519.
