Landfill Measure in San Bernardino
Your coverage of the landfill initiative, Measure L, before San Bernardino County voters conveyed a sampling of some of the pros and cons of the proposed initiative but left out critical information for voters (March 19).
To see how Measure L would affect the environment and economy, San Bernardino County hired an independent environmental engineering firm to conduct a study on the implications of passage of the measure.
That technical study concluded that passage of the measure would provide a greater risk to water quality and cost millions of dollars. Ironically, passage of Measure L could result in the creation of as many as 18 new landfills--all of which would be close to existing population centers, many over existing drinking water supplies.
