World IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Senate Urges Recall of U.S. Ambassador
Colombia’s Senate overwhelmingly passed a resolution urging the government to demand the immediate recall of U.S. Ambassador Myles Frechette, citing what it called his “unacceptable interference” in the nation’s internal affairs. The move was prompted by published remarks in which Frechette said the congressional panel investigating drug corruption charges against President Ernesto Samper “has no credibility at all.” The panel, controlled by members of Samper’s own Liberal Party, is conducting a formal probe into allegations that the president accepted money from the world’s leading drug traffickers to finance his 1994 election campaign.
