Police Investigate Alleged Taping of Minors Having Sex

Police are investigating allegations that a 17-year-old Los Alamitos High school athlete secretly videotaped himself having sex with a 14-year-old girl and then shared the video with classmates, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Seal Beach Det. Bob Mullins said the sexual contact appeared to be consensual and that the investigation centers on whether there was surreptitious taping of minors having sex.

“The crux of the issue--the specific [violation] that we’re looking at here--is that the victim is a child, and it certainly is illegal to possess any pornographic material depicting children,” Mullins said.

He said the incident occurred in the 17-year-old’s Seal Beach home on Feb. 28 and that the girl’s parents contacted authorities May 3.

The names of the teenagers are being withheld because of their ages.

Four parents of students at Los Alamitos High said they learned about the incident from their children, who told them the video was shown at school on a small display screen attached to a camcorder.

Los Alamitos Unified School District officials said Wednesday they have launched a separate investigation and said they are prohibited by law from discussing the matter further.

Assistant Supt. Lorene Gonia called the report “an isolated incident.”

Mullins said the police investigation is continuing.

“I’d hate to see something like this blown out of proportion,” he said. “It’s just one couple having sex together who are teenagers.”
