Jerry Lloyd, the first athletic trainer at Cal State Fullerton, died Tuesday in Texas after a long history of kidney problems. He was 53.

Lloyd was a part of the Fullerton athletic program from 1969 to 1992, when polycystic kidney disease forced him to take a leave of absence.

He had a kidney transplant May 20, 1993, and soon retired and moved to Waller, Texas. He had a second transplant last month.

“When you say Titan family, it really was,” said Fullerton College Coach Gene Murphy, who coached with Lloyd at Cal State Fullerton. “He was an integral part of their life both on and off the field. He was a good friend to a lot of people. You can say trainer, but that was his job. More than that, he was a good friend--especially to the athletes.”

Lloyd graduated from Long Beach State in 1969. Under his direction, Fullerton developed a highly acclaimed program of developing student athletic trainers, and he also tutored hundreds of certified athletic trainers.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and adult children, Dawn and Shawn.
