FRIDAY: Blues Music

Despite the fact that the most blues-inducing event in Santa Barbara is when Nordstrom is closed, the 5th Annual Blues Music Festival will be transacted at 5 p.m. at the tree-lined Santa Barbara County Bowl.

B.B. King will bring his guitar, Lucille, for some legendary blues songs, and more legends, the Neville Brothers, will be the co-headliners. Also on the bill is Delbert McClinton and the guitar wizardry of Duke Robillard.

SUNDAY: Wayne’s World

He’s got two more names than Madonna and longer blond hair--hey, it must be teenage blues guitar god Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

He’ll be at the Ventura Theatre for an 8 p.m. show, and anyway, “The Simpsons” is a rerun. Shepherd hit it big with his 1995 debut, “Leadbetter Heights,” which rose to the top of the Billboard blues chart.

At 18, Shepherd has been opening for Bob Dylan and the Eagles, and may make young ladies forget how to spell Keanu Reeves. Opening will be the Guy Martin Group, featuring a local who can more than hold his own when it comes to serious guitar licks.

Horse Fair

Feel like horsing around on a lazy summer day? Peters Arabian Ranch in Moorpark is hosting its eighth annual Horsin’ Around for HELP, running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This fund-raising event benefits the Handicapped Equestrian Learning Program at the ranch, which helps people with disabilities learn to ride.

The festivities include a country jamboree with games and entertainment, barbecue, country western dancing, a western cowboy Guns ‘n Garters show, and celebrity look-alikes.

Riders in the HELP program will perform, as will Magic, the horse that does tricks, along with the Mexican Indian Fire Dancers, Danza Chauatemoc.

Admission is free, but parking is $2. The ranch is at 7155 Walnut Canyon Road. For information, call 529-1888.

A GLANCE AHEAD: Seabee Festival

The annual Seabee Summerfest returns to the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme Aug. 24 and 25.

Both days feature a variety of activities, including ship tours, Seabee demonstrations, Naval equipment parade and hot air balloon rides. This year’s naval vessel highlights include a firsthand look at the USS Stethem, one of the Navy’s foremost weapons systems.

Plus, there will be lots of musical entertainment--including reggae, funk, soul and country bands--sports competitions, car show, carnival and crafts fair.

Sports competitions include basketball, volleyball, roller hockey, volleyball and more.
