Wieder Named to Trade Advisory Panel by Clinton

Former County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder was appointed Thursday by President Clinton to an advisory board on U.S. trade policy.

The Commission on U.S.-Pacific Trade & Investment Policy advises the president on how to increase U.S. trade opportunities in Japan and other Asian countries.

The 18-member board includes representatives of business, government and academia.

Wieder, of Huntington Beach, said she is excited about the opportunity.

“The whole purpose of this is to get the business community to do more overseas trade,” she said. “That will mean more jobs here and a better balance of trade.”

Wieder currently is president of Linkage, a private consulting business.

For 15 years, she served as county supervisor, establishing the Office of Protocol, which helps local business owners trying to do business in other countries.

She is a former mayor and councilwoman of Huntington Beach, and for 10 years was on the staff of Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty.

Wieder has also been a member of the Transoceanic Traders, a partnership that imports and exports products from Europe and Asia. She has served as chairwoman of the Advisory Board of the International Forum for Corporate Directors, and she serves as vice president of the International Women’s Forum.
