Santa Ana Man Killed on Freeway
A 56-year-old Santa Ana man was killed Friday night when he stepped in front of a car traveling about 65 mph in the fast lane of the Riverside Freeway near Imperial Highway.
California Highway Patrol authorities said they did not know why the man, identified as Duane Scheeler, was on the freeway.
The driver told officers she was traveling at about 10 p.m. when a figure stepped from the darkness directly in front of her car.
Scheeler died at the scene, while a passenger in the woman’s car suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP.
Other motorists said they had seen a man walking south along the freeway, neither looking at nor paying attention to the passing traffic.
