Utah’s defensive pressure ruined the debut of the Stanford quarterback Chad Hutchinson, who also was undermined by his team’s lack of a running attack, as the Utes defeated the Cardinal, 17-10, Saturday at Stanford.

Senior Mike Fouts, a nephew of Dan Fouts, passed for 222 yards and Juan Johnson ran for 114 yards for Utah (1-1), which rebounded from an embarrassing 20-17 loss at Utah State in its season-opener last weekend.

Hutchinson, a first-round draft pick as a pitcher by the Atlanta Braves who has little football experience, was 23 for 40 for 265 yards.

California 45, San Jose State 25--The penalties came fast and furious and in record numbers, but the points came even faster, allowing the Golden Bears to win at San Jose and make Steve Mariucci a winner in his coaching debut.

“It’s a good place to start,” said Mariucci, a former Cal assistant who returned after four years as the quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers.

Cal’s Pat Barnes completed 19 of 23 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns.

Washington State 38, Temple 34--Ryan Leaf threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Chad Carpenter with 1:36 remaining to give the Cougars a nonconference victory over the Owls at Philadelphia.
