SMU Doubles ’95 Win Total, Stuns Arkansas
Southern Methodist, which was 1-10 last season, improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 23-10 victory over Arkansas.
SMU has won two in a row for the first time since 1992, and is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 1985.
Arkansas (0-1), which has 14 starters back from last season’s 8-4 team, was in position to expand a 10-7 lead when SMU linebacker Craig Swann chased down quarterback Pete Burks, caused a fumble and recovered it at the Mustang 48.
One play after throwing to Albert Johnson for 15 yards, SMU quarterback Ramon Flanigan picked up a bad center snap, rolled left and and threw a pass that an extended Rafig Cooper caught for a touchdown with 1:05 to play in the first half.
Flanigan accounted for another touchdown in the third quarter as Donte Womack took a screen pass and scored on a 34-yard play.
