Steelers Question Morris’ Signing
The agent for Bam Morris said the former Pittsburgh Steeler running back is taking a deserved second chance, but the Steelers think Morris is profiting unfairly from a drug-related suspension.
Agent Steve Zucker argues it was the Steelers’ choice to abandon Morris on July 10 after he was put on probation in Texas for possessing nearly six pounds of marijuana.
Morris would have made $185,600 with the Steelers this season. On Tuesday, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, who will pay him about $800,000 this season and $1 million in 1997.
“We took a stand,” said Tom Donahoe, the Steelers’ director of football operations. “This is a guy who might have been the Super Bowl MVP if we win the game. But what he did, we felt was wrong. We weren’t interested in having that type of player on our team. Now it seems as if he gets rewarded for what he did.”

Rod Woodson, who recovered from a serious knee injury to return to the Steeler secondary, is questionable for Sunday’s game against Houston because of an inflamed Achilles’ tendon. . . . The NFL rejected Denver rookie linebacker John Mobley’s appeal of a $10,000 fine for a hit that knocked out San Francisco quarterback Gino Torretta in the exhibition season.
