Savanna Gets Critical Break to Turn Back Buena Park, 21-16

Ray Widi recovered a Buena Park fumble on his 44-yard line with 1:53 left in the game to help Savanna turn back Buena Park, 21-16, in a nonleague game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

Buena Park (1-3) had trailed Savanna at halftime, 21-3.

The Coyotes’ Tony Alanzo intercepted Ryan Poland at the Savanna 14 with four minutes and 55 seconds left in the third period. Three plays later, Buena Park cut the Rebels lead to 21-9 as Ruben Gasso passed 19 yards to Brett Strike for the score.

Gasso was seven of 11 in passing for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 60 yards on 13 carries.

The senior quarterback passed to Brian McDonald on the second play of the fourth quarter to complete a 70-yard scoring play.

McDonald led Buena Park in rushing with 86 yards on 17 carries.

Savanna (3-1) took a 7-0 lead on sophomore runningback Jason Brown’s 21-yard run. Brown rushed for 91 yards on 13 carries.

Buena Park’s Florin Govic kicked a 33-yard field goal only to have Savanna score twice in the second quarter.

Poland ran 21 yards for one score and Cameron King ran 11 yards for a touchdown. King had 16 carries for 89 yards.
