Calling It Quits: Van Nuys High Coach Dave Bessler has resigned as coach of the boys’ volleyball team.

Bessler began the boys’ program in 1987, but said he is stepping down to concentrate on teaching calculus. He will still coach the girls’ volleyball team and plans to remain with the boys’ team in an advisory capacity.

Greg Wah will replace Bessler.

Taking Over: Jeff DeGlopper has been named girls’ soccer coach at Palmdale, replacing Mike Shepard, who resigned in February.

DeGlopper, 25, was the Palmdale boys’ junior varsity coach last season. A former soccer standout at Sussex-Hamilton High in Sussex, Wis., DeGlopper has been a teacher at Palmdale for four years.

Sidelined: Sophomore Jamie Newman of El Camino Real High, defending City Section girls’ cross-country champion, is expected to miss her second consecutive meet today due to soreness in her knees.

El Camino Real opened the season last week, but Newman has yet to race due to recurring knee pain which first flared up at the end of last track season.

Budde System: Josh Budde, a former professional soccer player in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues, has been hired as boys’ soccer coach at Harvard-Westlake.

Budde, 30, played four seasons with the Tulsa Roughnecks of the USISL and has coached high school soccer in North Carolina and Oklahoma for five years.

Budde replaces Mark Devey, who resigned in April after one season to spend more time in his job as an assistant dean at Harvard-Westlake middle school.
