Third-quarter profit rose as Chicago-based Amoco benefited from the sale of its foam products business and higher energy prices. Without the sale, earnings would have fallen.

For the three months ended Sept. 30, net income rose to $635 million, or $1.28 a share, from $599 million, or $1.21, in the comparable 1995 period.

Amoco’s stock rose 50 cents to close at $75.375 on the NYSE.
