An Arkansas attorney was sentenced to 10 months in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges that arose from the Whitewater investigation.

Eugene Fitzhugh, 73, was accused of trying to bribe a Little Rock investment banker to make an illegal loan. Prosecutors said he joined two other men in a series of fraudulent transactions worth more than $300,000.

The other two men have already been sentenced.

Independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr is leading the wide-ranging probe into the personal and political finances of President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Fitzhugh case had no connection to the Clintons, but Starr had jurisdiction because it involved evidence provided by David Hale, the investment banker.

Hale has alleged that Clinton pressured him to make an illegal $300,000 loan to Susan McDougal, Clinton’s business partner in the Whitewater real estate venture. Clinton has denied the allegations and has not been charged with any crime.
