UC Irvine has sold 10 acres to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for development of a regulatory laboratory.

The federal government paid $3.6 million for the parcel just north of the campus along Fairchild Road. The agency will use it for testing, analysis, training and investigations.

Existing FDA research facilities in the San Pedro and downtown areas of Los Angeles, Irvine and other locations will be consolidated into the new 140,000-square-foot lab. About 200 employees will work there.

UCI plans to use the earnings to hire esteemed science professors under its Bren Fellows Program, which uses the proceeds from land sales to attract top academics, said university spokesman Tracy Childs.

The college’s students and professors expect to have access to the facility for collaborative research and student internships, Childs said.
