Magnolia Pins Down Wrestling Victory Over Santa Ana

Magnolia rallied behind Dan King’s pin at 145 pounds to upset third-ranked Santa Ana, 36-31, in a nonconference wrestling match Tuesday at Magnolia.

King’s pin of Mauricio Joaguin in 2 minutes 46 seconds was followed by teammate Nathan Yamashita’s 7-5 upset over Jose Morales at 152 pounds.

Magnolia trailed, 22-0, after the first four matches.

Also winning on pins for Magnolia (1-0) were Erland Jones (189) and David Pe’a (215). Santa Ana is 0-1.

In the National Sports Grill boys’ basketball tournament:

Servite 52, Santa Fe Springs 49--Steve Shay scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter in an opening-round game.

St. Paul’s Wes Wilcox missed a potential tying three-pointer at the buzzer.

Dennis Wisco scored 13 points and Rafael Zielonka had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Servite (1-0). St. Paul is 0-1.

In the Diablo Inferno boys’ basketball tournament:

El Toro 68, Mission Viejo 67 (OT)--El Toro (2-0) made seven of eight free throws in overtime to clinch the victory. Fabrizio Mendiola scored 22 points and Josh Rupprecht added 19 for the Chargers. Commander King scored 24 points for Mission Viejo (1-1).

In the Buena Park tournament:

Downey 55, Kennedy 51--Jake Kunz scored 12 points for Kennedy (0-1). Downey (1-0) made 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Fighting Irish.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Dana Hills 60, Century 56--Huber Souza scored 15 points for visiting Dana Hills. Ricky Lopez scored 24 points for host Century (0-1).

Orangewood Academy 65, Webb 58--Patrick Rainey led Orangewood Academy with 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Orangewood Academy ended the game on a 10-3 run.

In the Fullerton Invitational girls’ basketball tournament:

Loara 66, Santiago 53--Betsy Holman had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Loara in the first-round game. Brandy Mercer added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Loara (1-1). Stacey Trujillo scored 30 points, including nine three-pointers, for Santiago (0-1).

Brea Olinda 2, Rosary 0--Amanda Manton scored both goals for Brea Olinda (1-0) in its season opener.

Cypress 2, Cerritos 1--Jane Specht scored with a minute left to lead Cypress (1-0) in the season opener. Specht scored two goals in the game.

Dana Hills 3, Aliso Niguel 2--Sydney Leonard had a goal and an assist and Alex Richey scored the game-winning goal in the 73nd minute for visiting Dana Hills (1-0).

Foothill 2, Corona del Mar 0--Natasha El-Jurdi and Stacey Brandon scored for Foothill in its opener.

Fountain Valley 2, Newport Harbor 2--Kim Green and Amber Miller scored second-half goals for Fountain Valley (0-0-1).

Los Alamitos 1, Irvine 0--Jenny Willemse had six saves in a shutout for Los Alamitos (1-0). Cyndi Tredway scored the game’s only goal.

Santa Ana Valley 2, Costa Mesa 1--Carol Parra and Angie Rodriguez each scored a goal to help Santa Ana Valley overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Santa Margarita 2, Edison 1--Ami Aylor and Kristen Rowe each scored a goal for Santa Margarita (1-0) in the season opener.
