China Bars Efforts to Unionize, Study Says

A report on workers’ rights in China says Beijing is systematically crushing all attempts to form trade unions and has detained dozens of activists on spurious charges.

The report by the Brussels-based International Confederation of Free Trade Unions says China daily violates fundamental human rights, adding that there has been little improvement since the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square.

The confederation’s report is timed to coincide with the current session of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, where Denmark is leading a bid for a resolution condemning China’s record.
