Ruling Due on Petitions for New School District

Proponents of a new school district in Lakewood hope to find out soon whether they have enough supporters to move ahead with their plan to take over the city’s 22 schools.

County officials have until Monday to rule on the validity of more than 16,000 signatures gathered over the last year. The petitions were handed in earlier this month to the county Office of Education, which turned them over to the county registrar for counting.

A county committee on school district organization would review the proposal if enough signatures are validated and determined to represent portions of the city now divided by four different school districts. Such a review would be forwarded to state education officials, who would then rule on what kind of election should be held.
