Vigilantes update--The race for the second-half South Division pennant is already bunched; Mission Viejo, Salinas and Sonoma County (the first-half champion) are all a game behind Chico. The Vigilantes have a chance to make an early move, finishing their current trip with Salinas before returning home to entertain Grays Harbor, which is plodding along in last place in the North Division. Sam Taylor has joined Alan Burke among the league’s top-10 batters. Taylor is 10th at .327, Burke is sixth at .361.

Peppers update--Like the Vigilantes, the Peppers will try to build on a one-game winning streak with tonight’s contest. Salinas has a couple of players among the league leaders; Eddie Comeaux is tops in stolen bases with 25, and Wally Ritchie is one of three pitchers tied for most wins with eight. Ritchie also has the dubious honor of having given up the most home runs this season (13). Right-hander Mike Trimarco, who starts Friday, pitched a 1-0, two-hit shutout in his last home start against the Vigilantes on July 11.
