LAPD Chief Bernard Parks will speak tonight at the first in a series of Valley community forums.

Parks is expected to talk about community policing and his plans for the police department under his leadership. He will also take questions from the public.

The forum, part of an ongoing series hosted by Councilwoman Laura Chick, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Birmingham High Auditorium, 17000 Haynes St., Van Nuys.

In an effort to bring area residents into public discussions of issues that affect them, Chick said that the forums will bring experts to the podium to take questions and give information.

The councilwoman said the meetings are planned as a way for residents to learn about and discuss public safety and other issues affecting the Valley, identify problems and help find solutions.

A second forum, to be held in January, will focus on reducing neighborhood blight.
