Ceremony Marks Base’s Transition

Share

The closing of the Tustin Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station will take another step forward with a ceremony today at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony will formally designate the base with the reduced title of Marine Corps Air Facility. The change comes as the air station moves closer to its 1999 scheduled closure and relocation of forces. Recently, the station drastically reduced its hours of flight operations, and up to 100 Marines are moving to the future Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego.

“We’re not shutting down yet, but this is another step in that process,” said Cpl. Deanna McDaniel, a spokeswoman for the Tustin base. “The helicopters will still be here.”

After its closure, the base is slated for a development project that includes a mix of commercial and residential uses.
