Laguna Beach Overcomes Deficit to Win in Volleyball
Laguna Beach fought back from a two-game deficit to defeat Fountain Valley, 11-15, 6-15, 15-11, 15-13, 15-13, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Friday at Fountain Valley.
Kristen Gunderson led the Artists with 23 kills, Liz Belloni had 22 and Lauralee Neptune finished with 17 in the season opener for both teams.
In other nonleague volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Calvary Chapel 0--April Ross had 11 kills to help Newport Harbor to a 15-13, 15-3, 15-5 victory.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Capistrano Valley 16, Santa Margarita 2--Capistrano Valley’s No. 1 doubles team of Kylee Webster and Carolyn Mitchell, swept their matches, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.
Corona del Mar 15, Los Alamitos 3--Ruchika Budhraja and Courtney Tenerelli swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for Corona del Mar (1-0). Nadia Vaughan recorded a 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 sweep in singles for the Sea Kings.
Dana Hills 17, Newport Harbor 1--Sisters Summer and Amber Tantee won their singles matches and helped Dana Point to its second consecutive victory. Summer won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, and Amber swept, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
Esperanza 16, El Modena 2--Freshman Kelly Six swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. Ritchelle also won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 for Esperanza (2-0).
Saddleback 9, Century 9 (Saddleback won on games, 82-75)--Catherine Nguyen’s 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweep in singles was the difference for Saddleback (1-0).
San Clemente 15, Costa Mesa 3--Lisett Polny and Kim Ray won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles for San Clemente (1-1).
In the Bell Gardens boys’ water polo tournament:
Katella 11, Damien 7--Jeremy Janton, who scored 17 goals Thursday in two games, had seven goals Friday to help Katella to the championship round.
