A man with a history of weapons charges barricaded himself for four hours in his home Monday before a SWAT team found him in the attic and arrested him without incident, police said.

The standoff began about 8:30 a.m. when detectives went to the home of Jeffrey Kane, 38, in the 1500 block of South Sierra Bonita Avenue to arrest him on an assault with a deadly weapon charge, said Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Partain.

Detectives went to the home to determine Kane’s whereabouts, Partain said, but Kane answered the door. He ran to the back of the house, discovered it was surrounded, then barricaded himself, Partain said, prompting a call to the SWAT team.

After numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact Kane by phone and bullhorn, the SWAT team fired tear gas through a window just before noon, Partain said.

The SWAT team entered the house about 12:30 p.m. and arrested Kane, who was not armed, Partain said.
