College Will Offer Youth Signing Class
Pierce College is offering an American Sign Language course for students 10 to 14.
The class, which begins Saturday, will teach basic vocabulary and finger spelling, a technique that uses signed letters of the alphabet to spell out words.
The class will be taught by Lisa McNicoll, a graduate assistant who served as a tutor at Cal State Northridge, National Center on Deafness.
Students also will learn how body language and facial expressions are used by deaf people to communicate.
“In the past, when we have taught this class, many of the students said they had a deaf family member,” said Marian Suckut, director of the Office of Community Services. “The class is an opportunity to learn to communicate better with people they love.”
The class will be held Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and runs through Aug. 15.
