UCI Plastic Surgeon Physician of the Year
The county’s largest physicians organization, the Orange County Medical Assn., has named David W. Furnas of Corona del Mar its 1998 Physician of the Year.
Furnas was honored recently for his career of nearly three decades at UC Irvine, where he is recognized as a leading international practitioner, researcher, writer, lecturer and educator in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Association President Stanley C. Lowenberg called Furnas a “great humanitarian” for his work in rural and poor areas of many countries, including Kenya, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
“As a teacher, Dr. Furnas has inspired and stimulated a generation of physicians,” Lowenberg said. “‘As a physician with exceptional skills, he has selflessly touched the lives of thousands throughout the world.”
A native of Idaho, Furnas joined UCI in 1969 to found its plastic surgery residency program. Since 1980, he has served as clinical professor and chief, division of plastic surgery.
