Laguna Hills Hires Ingalls to Coach Football Team

Laguna Hills has hired Bruce Ingalls to coach football, Athletic Director Dave Brown said Wednesday.

Ingalls came to Southern California as the defensive coach at Servite from 1980-85.

He came to Laguna Hills as the defensive coordinator in 1986 and has been on staff since. He replaces Steve Bresnahan, who resigned this spring.

Fountain Valley has hired two interim baseball co-coaches, Athletic Director Mike Henigan said.

Chris Sorce and Joe MacDonald, who were assistants last year, will coach the Barons next season. Former coach Ron La Ruffa has said he will return for the 2000 season. He left to be the pitching coach at Cypress College.

UC Irvine’s swim team signed six athletes to letters of intent, school officials announced.

Signing with the men’s team were Gus Fowler (Orange Coast), a community college All-American in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly; John Persson (San Jose Pioneer High), who competes in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle; Steven Poling (Laguna Hills High), an All-American in the 100 breaststroke, and Kawika Tarayao (Corona del Mar High), who swims the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle.

Josephina Kim (Orange High), who swims the 100 backstroke, and Nancy Yi (Los Angeles Immaculate Heart High), who swims 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, signed with the women’s team.

Steven Smyth, a left-handed pitcher from Cypress College, has signed with USC, Trojan Coach Mike Gillespie said.

Smyth was 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA in one season at Cypress and was All-Orange Empire Conference. He was a 13th-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves.

Four Southern California Blues girls’ soccer teams advanced to today’s quarterfinals at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships in Albuquerque.

The San Juan Capistrano-based club’s under-15 team defeated Arizona, 2-0. Ashley Casis of Capistrano Valley High scored one goal.

The under-16 Blues beat Wyoming, 1-0. Ally Halpern of San Clemente scored. The under-18 team tied New Mexico, 1-1. Michelle Banister of Canyon High scored for the Blues. The under-19 Blues beat Oregon, 6-1. Rene Petersen, a Capistrano Valley graduate, scored one goal.

At the X Games in San Diego, Brian Patch of Huntington Beach finished sixth in the skateboarding vert finals. Chris Gentry of Costa Mesa was 10th. Andy Macdonald of San Diego was the winner.
