Burkholder Sparks Western to Victory Over Costa Mesa

Loren Burkholder, in the final group, defeated his opponent by one stroke on the final hole as Western defeated Costa Mesa, 215-216, in a nonleague match at Costa Mesa’s Mesa Linda course.

The final group reached the tee at Mesa Linda’s par-4, 372-yard ninth hole with Costa Mesa holding a two-stroke lead. Burkholder held a two-stroke lead in his match but still needed to win the hole by a stroke.

Burkholder bogeyed the hole and his opponent double-bogeyed and Western won the match. Burkholder finished with a nine-over 44.

Mike Castelum shot a 40 for the Pioneers, who are 3-2. Costa Mesa falls to 7-2.

In other nonleague golf:

Aliso Niguel 205, Capistrano Valley 227--Medalist Andrew Lin shot a two-over 38 at El Niguel to lead Aliso Niguel (5-0). Teammate Matt Schreiber finished with a 40.

San Clemente 191, Corona del Mar 208--Freshman Casey Strohsahl led all golfers with a par 36 at Pacific to help the San Clemente improve to 3-1.

Santa Margarita 199, Villa Park 215--Steve Conway had two birdies and finished with a one-over 35 for Santa Margarita (2-0) at home course Coto de Caza North. Zach Cohn shot a 40 for Villa Park.

Tustin 217, El Modena 230--Tustin’s Stewart Shikai shot a par 36 at Tustin Ranch.

Woodbridge 205, Loara 211--Mike Clark and Yon Yim each shot a four-over 40 for host Woodbridge (4-0) at Rancho San Joaquin. Daniel Jung shot a 38 for Loara (2-5).

In Sunset League baseball:

Huntington Beach 1, Edison 0--Junior Jeff Ruziecki’s home run in the bottom of the seventh gave Huntington Beach the league-opening win. Nate Beucler pitched a complete game, striking out 10 for Huntington Beach (4-2, 1-0).

In nonleague baseball:

Buena Park 14, Rancho Alamitos 4--Sophomore Jeremy Tolmasoss pitched a four-hitter. He also had two hits and four RBIs. Eric Wolford had two RBIs and scored two runs for host Buena Park (5-1). Rancho Alamitos falls to 4-4.

Magnolia 7, Bolsa Grande 2--Pitcher Ryan Joslyn had his first win and was three for four at the plate. Joey Gutierrez and Scott Henry each had two hits each for host Magnolia (2-0).

In nonleague softball:

Orange 7, Los Amigos 1--Courtney Winger and April Weisner of Orange (4-4) had the only extra-base hits of the game, a double and triple. Los Amigos is 5-1.

Rancho Alamitos 10, Lakewood Artesia 0--Tina Hyllested pitched her first no-hitter of the year with 11 strikeouts and two walks, and also scored three runs for host Rancho Alamitos (2-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Servite 100, Katella 71--Jarod Swan won the 50 (23.34 seconds) and 100 freestyles (52.73) and swam on the winning 200- (1:35.32) and 400-freestyle relays (3:39.38) to lead Servite (2-0). Teammate Jarrod Cruzat won the 100 backstroke in Southern Section qualifying time of 55.24 and led off the winning 200 medley relay (1:48.76).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Canyon 113, Brea Olinda 58--Erin Volcan was a double winner for Canyon (3-1) as she won the 200 individual medley (2:21.3) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.0). Teammate Nicole Miller took first in the 100 freestyle (59.8).

Costa Mesa 119, Woodbridge 49--Senior Allison Alastuey won the 200 freestyle (2:06.25) and the 100 butterfly (1:10.22) to lead Costa Mesa (2-1).

Rosary 91, Katella 74--Laura Preston took first in the 200 freestyle (2:05.3) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.4) for Rosary (2-0) and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:52.4) and 400 freestyle relay (4:20.1).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 14, Laguna Beach 4--Brian Morton won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, and teammate Curtis Ellmore won his sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 4 Sunny Hills 12, Diamond Bar 6--Joseph Kao won his singles sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, for Sunny Hills (2-2). Diamond Bar falls to 4-3.

No. 9 Aliso Niguel 10, No. 6 Mission Viejo 8--Aliso Niguel’s Chris Kan defeated previously unbeaten Eric Bachelor of Mission Viejo, 6-4, and won the other two sets, 6-3, 6-0, to lead undefeated Aliso Niguel (7-0). Mission Viejo is 5-1.

Irvine 17, Saddleback 1--Irvine swept all nine singles matches as Shakty Chemitigani, Jaideep Dore and Hadley Ogle were undefeated. The Irvine (3-4) doubles teams of Max Cho and Jeff Friedman and Bobby Yan and Bryan Richter also swept their matches against the visiting Roadrunners.

Santa Margarita 13, Villa Park 5--No. 2 singles player Derek Fears swept his set for the host Eagles (5-2), losing only one game. Garrick Gaffney and Michale Hsu also swept in No. 1 doubles, and No. 2 doubles partners Mike Doyle and Nick Streeter gave up five games in their sweep.

Western 9, Pacifica 9 (Western won on games, 87-82)--The No. 3 doubles team of Henry Vo and BJ Mistry was the difference for Western as the two won their last two sets, 7-6, 6-7.
