Congress OKs $600,000 to Boost Highway Safety
A transportation bill passed by Congress last week includes $650,000 to make safety improvements to Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and fund a low-frequency radio station to broadcast traffic conditions, officials said.
Of the money earmarked for Malibu, $600,000 will help Malibu pay for improvements on the highway, which could include construction of a median on the busy roadway, said Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks), who requested the funding.
The remaining $50,000 will go to start the radio station, which will serve travelers on or near the highway, Sherman said.
Sherman appeared at a news conference on the highway last month with Sheriff Sherman Block and Malibu officials to urge the state Department of Transportation to examine the idea of constructing a median, citing a spate of accidents that killed four people between December and April.
Caltrans officials have said they are studying ways to improve safety on the highway and hope to report their findings in June.
