Contracts for Home Sales to Include Megan’s Law Notice

Prospective home buyers in California now must be notified that they can access a state data base to determine if sex offenders live nearby, under an enhanced Megan’s Law signed by Gov. Pete Wilson on Monday.

The bill by Sen. Richard G. Polanco (D-Los Angeles) requires that contracts for the sale of homes include a notice that the buyer can access the Megan’s Law data base.

Under that law, police are required to notify residents when a convicted sex offender moves into their neighborhood.

“If Megan’s Law is to be effective, people need to know where to access it,” Polanco said. “For a family looking to purchase a new home, this information is of critical importance. People need to know that this resource is available.”
