Voges Is Taking Another Shot at U.S. Amateur Championship

Mitch Voges of Simi Valley, the 1991 U.S. Amateur champion, is one of four players from the region who will tee off Monday in the 99th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

In the 36-hole final in 1991, Voges defeated Manny Zerman of South Africa, 7 and 6, on the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. Zerman also lost to Phil Mickelson of San Diego, 5 and 4, in the 1990 final at Cherry Hills Country Club in Englewood, Colo.

Voges, a member of the 1991 U.S. Walker Cup team, will start on the first hole at Spyglass Hill at 1:06 p.m. on Monday and play from the No. 10 tee at Pebble Beach at 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday.

Steve Ballard of Westlake Village, director of membership for American Golf Corp. at Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley, starts at noon Monday on the first tee at Pebble Beach and plays from No. 10 at Spyglass Hill at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Russell Surber of La Canada Flintridge, a graduate of Flintridge Prep who plays for the University of Texas, tees off at 1:06 p.m. on Monday at Pebble Beach and plays at 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday from the 10th tee at Spyglass Hill.

Tim Wren of Oxnard, who played at Santa Clara High and Cal State Northridge and works at River Ridge Golf Course, starts at 9:09 a.m. Monday on the 10th tee at Spyglass Hill and plays Tuesday at 1:54 p.m. from the first tee at Pebble Beach.

Linda Ishii of Westlake Village shot 75-77--152 on Monday and Tuesday to qualify for match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C.

Jennifer Rosales of the Philippines, the 1998 NCCA women’s champion, eliminated Ishii--her USC teammate--7 and 5 in the second round Wednesday.

Ishii, a graduate of Westlake High, defeated Marcy Newton of High Point, N.C., 2 and 1, in the first round of match play earlier in the day.

Krystal Shearer of Northridge, a senior at Alemany High, shot 82-81--163 and failed to qualify for match play.

Local favorite Roy Moon won the Simi Valley Amateur Championship by two strokes Sunday at Simi Hills Golf Course.

Moon, a senior at Royal High who is the Marmonte League champion, finished at 68-70--138.

First-round leader Alex Kuyumajian of Thousand Oaks, a Westlake High graduate who plays for College of the Canyons, was second at 66-74--140.

Bryan Geiberger of Rancho Mirage shot 70-71--141 and tied for third with Daniel Sullivan of Pasadena, who totaled 68-73--141, and Mike Smith of Ventura, who wound up at 67-74--141.

David Garrity of Chatsworth was sixth at 76-66--142.

Anne Lee of Northridge and Hana Kim of Encino were beaten in singles Thursday but helped the West to a 25 1/2-24 1/2 victory in the 10th annual Canon Cup matches at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Tai Perry of Kennett Square, Pa., defeated Kim, 3 and 2, and Aree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla, downed Lee, 7 and 6.

Lee and Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda helped the West slow a rally by the East by halving their match with Naree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., and James Vargas of Miami in mixed four-ball play on Wednesday.

Miriam Nagl of Sarasota, Fla., and Kari Damron of Conway, S.C., defeated Kim and Lee, 5 and 4, in four-ball play earlier Wednesday.

Devlin Thomas of Ojai finished at 75-71--146 to win the boys’ 15-17 division of the Ventura City Junior Championship at Buenaventura and Olivas Park golf courses on Monday and Tuesday.

Ryan Pitek of Thousand Oaks was second at 75-74--149, and Richard Young of Oak Park totaled 77-74--151 to tie for third with Ali Siam of Westlake Village, who wound up at 76-75--151.

Charlene Alfonso of Agoura Hills shot 79-72--151 to win the girls’ 13-17 division by five strokes.

Beth Allen of Ojai was second at 79-77--156 and Liane Fujita of Simi Valley finished third at 91-93--184.

Sean King of Ventura shot 76-72--148 and won the boys’ 13-14 division in a card-off with Kyle Dowden of Somis, who finished at 74-74--148.

Jason Wilk of Camarillo was third at 77-74--151.

Anthony Kim of Studio City shot 72-74--146 and tied for fourth in a Southern California PGA Junior Tour Toyota Cup Series event Monday and Tuesday at La Quinta Resort and Spa.

Brian O’Flaherty of Westlake Village totaled 71-81--152 and tied for ninth.

Scott Fulkerson of Simi Valley finished at 82-76--158, with Mark Modglin of Simi Valley at 78-84--162 and Eric Choe of Lancaster at 82-86--168.

Kyle Thurston of Moorpark shot two-over par 74 on Monday and finished second in the Jane Fortmiller Memorial Invitational at Calabasas Golf and Country Club.

Andrew Lee of Monterey Park won the title at 73.

Jeremy Bovill of Agoura shot 80 and tied for third with Yun-Gi Kim of Bellflower.

Scott Bashin of Northridge and Roy Moon of Simi Valley will start play Sunday in the 31st annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic at Northgate Country Club in Houston.

The tournament is one of the four legs of junior golf’s Grand Slam.

Former champions include Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard, Bob Tway and Billy Andrade.
