Large and Lovely

While I was a little offended by the tone of the article about Camryn Manheim (“She’s Made Her Case a Bit Too Well,” by Paul Brownfield, June 20), I’m downright disturbed by the attitudes expressed in two of the letters you published last Sunday.

Both anorexia and compulsive overeating can kill. And one of the root causes for both is the lack of perspective in the media as to what is beautiful. Why is the idea of a beautiful large woman so threatening? Camryn is no more advocating compulsive overeating than Calista Flockhart is advocating anorexia.

Maybe it’s just me, but as long as there are women like Manheim and Emme, as well as Calista Flockhart and Lara Flynn Boyle, girls will learn to develop a positive self-image, regardless of what that image may be. It’s a win-win situation.

While one can understand Manheim’s desire to extend her range beyond those “get-me-a-fat-actress” roles, I was disappointed to read of her refusal to portray Mama Cass in in an upcoming film.

Cass Elliot may have been overweight, but she was also a terrific singer and, like Manheim herself, a charismatic performer and a classy woman. I hope Manheim reconsiders the offer.
