MARQUIS BRIGNAC

Taft, Senior. Event: 100 meters

* Brignac, who is headed to Cal State Northridge on a football scholarship, was the most consistent 100 sprinter in the region. He won the Northwest Valley Conference title, placed fifth in the City Section championships and had a best of 10.98.

BLAINE BUSSEY

Taft, Senior. Events: 200 meters, 400 meters

* Bussey was academically ineligible during the first part of the season, but ran superbly in the 400 after returning. He set a region record of 46.3 in the 400 in the Northwest Valley Conference finals before winning his second consecutive City title, his first state championship and finishing second in the Foot Locker national outdoor championships. He led the yearly region list in the 200 with a 21.56 clocking and finished second in the City final.

JON RYMSZA

Chaminade, Senior. Event: 800 meters

* Rymsza ran a region-leading 1:56.2 in a dual meet against Loyola and came from behind to win the Southern Section Division III title in 1:58.07.

JOSH SPIKER

Ventura, Junior. Events: 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters

* Spiker, the region’s athlete of the year, won the state title in the 3,200 and posted region-leading and school-record times of 4:12.19 in the 1,600 and 8:56.66 in the 3,200. He ran state-leading times in the 1,600 on two occasions and did that once in the 3,200. His 3,200 best moved him to sixth on the all-time region list.

CHRIS MORGAN

Taft, Sophomore. Event: 110-meter high hurdles

* Morgan finished third in the City championships and ran a region-leading and school-record 14.44 to place ninth in the state final.

OLIVER JACKSON

Royal, Junior. Events: 300-meter intermediate hurdles, Long jump

* Jackson finished second in the state championships in the long jump with a wind-aided 24-8 3/4 and his school record of 24-4 3/4 moved him to sixth on the all-time region list. He ran a region-leading 38.62 in the 300 hurdles and placed fourth in the Southern Section Division II final.

TAFT

400-meter relay, 1,600-meter relay

* Toreador seniors Blaine Bussey, Marquis Brignac and Michael Adams and sophomore Chris Morgan clocked a region-leading 41.69 in the 400 relay to finish second in the City championships and moved to 10th on the all-time region list. The quartet of Bussey, senior Josh Engel, junior Alexis Pitt and freshman Tyrone Melton ran a region-leading 3:18.52 in the 1,600 relay to finish third in the City final.

FERNANDO LOPEZ

Taft, Junior. Event: High jump

* The 5-foot-9 Lopez won the City title, placed seventh in the state championships and cleared a school-record 6-10 to win the Northwest Valley Conference final. He was the co-region leader with junior Jerrick Holmes of Palmdale.

SHANE HACKETT

Verdugo Hills, Junior. Event: Pole vault

* Hackett won the City title, tied for sixth in the state championships and cleared a region-leading and school-record 15-4 in the qualifying round of the state meet.

RODNEY WOODS

Littlerock, Junior. Event: Triple jump

* Woods placed fifth in the state championships after winning the Southern Section Masters Meet and finishing second in the Southern Section Division I final. He bounded a region-leading and school-record 47-10 in the qualifying round of the state meet.

TRAVIS JOHNSON

Notre Dame, Junior. Event: Shotput

* Johnson won the Southern Section Division III title, placed third in the Masters Meet and set three school records during the season, topped by a 58-2 3/4 effort in the Division III preliminaries.

TIM ADRIAN

Moorpark, Senior. Event: Discus

* The Syracuse-bound Adrian finished fourth in the state championships, third in the Masters Meet and third in the Southern Section Division II final. He broke his own school record twice, topped by a 186-4 throw in the qualifying round of the state meet that moved him to third on the all-time region list.

SECOND TEAM

TODD FENTON

Notre Dame, Senior. Event: 100 meters

* Fenton placed seventh in 11.08 in the Southern Section Division III final after running a wind-aided 10.80 in the preliminaries.

SETH AMOO

Highland, Sophomore. Event: 200 meters

* Amoo placed fifth in the Southern Section Division I final in a school-record 21.57 and seventh in the Masters Meet in a wind-aided 21.51.

MENTU DANIEL

Antelope Valley, Senior. Event: 400 meters

* Daniel was unable to top his 47.24 career best from last summer, but he did run a season-best 47.77 to finish third in the Southern Section Division I final. He also placed fourth in the Masters Meet.

ONTAE CHANEY

Cleveland, Junior. Event: 800 meters

* Chaney’s season best of 1:57.72 ranked sixth on the region list, but he ran 1:58.2 or faster three times and placed fourth in the City championships.

BRIAN ANDERSON

Burroughs, Junior. Event: 1,600 meters

* Anderson ran a career best of 4:19.25 to win the open race of the Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in April, defeated senior Jacob Boeding of Saugus for the Foothill League title and placed sixth in the Southern Section Division II final.

MATT SWANEY

Ventura, Senior. Event: 3,200 meters

* The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo-bound Swaney was hampered by a hamstring injury at the end of the season, but ran a career-best 9:20.86 to finish fourth in the Southern Section Division II final and placed seventh in the Masters Meet.

MARCUS RAINES

Littlerock, Sophomore. Events: 110-meter high hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hurdles

* Raines clocked a school-record 14.55 in the high hurdles to finish third in the Southern Section Division I final and was ninth in the Masters Meet. He finished a disappointing ninth in the intermediate hurdles in the Division I final after running a career-best 39.54 in the preliminaries.

CLEVELAND

400-meter relay, 1,600-meter relay

* The Cavalier foursome of senior Andre McIntosh, juniors James Bethea and Julian Linear, and sophomore Matthew Clark ran a season best of 41.91 in the 400 relay to place fourth in the City championships. The 1,600 relay team also finished fourth in the City final as Bethea, Clark and juniors Ontae Chaney and Chris Barfield ran a season-best 3:18.93.

JERRICK HOLMES

Palmdale, Junior. Event: High jump

* Holmes placed a disappointing ninth in the Southern Section Division I final after winning the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in April with a school-record 6-10.

GEOFF CLARK

Crescenta Valley, Senior. Event: Pole vault

* Clark tied for fourth in the Southern Section Division I final and raised his career best to 14-0 this season.

CHRIS MORGAN

Taft, Sophomore. Event: Long jump

* The City champion placed ninth in the state final after leaping a career-best 23-8 1/2 in the qualifying round.

DEANGELO NEDD

El Camino Real, Senior. Event: Triple jump

* The runner-up in the City championships bounded a career-best 45-9 3/4 in the qualifying round of the state meet.

WILL SVITEK

Newbury Park, Junior. Event: Shotput

* Svitek won the Southern Section Division II title with a school-record 57-6 and finished sixth in the Masters Meet, a half inch behind the fifth--and final--qualifying spot for the state championships.

JEROME STEVENS

Rio Mesa, Senior. Event: Discus

* Stevens, one of the most improved throwers in the state, placed third in the Southern Section Division I final and fourth in the Masters Meet. His 183-1 best improved the Rio Mesa school record by nearly 20 feet and moved him to seventh on the all-time region list.
