BUENA PARK
Since discovering red imported fire ants in the city in April, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services has responded to 16 requests for eradication. The department has applied the initial treatment, the insecticide AWARD, at the sites. Councilman Gerald N. Sigler suggested at this week’s City Council meeting that staff check up on the affected areas, especially private properties, after that first treatment. The council eventually directed staff to keep a log of all fire ant eradications for three months. After that period, the city will decide if its eradication efforts are too costly and may explore other options.
