Police have discovered that the number of sex offenders living in the city is not nearly as high as expected. As a result, Interim Police Chief Mike McCrary told city officials last week that a $10,000 federal grant awarded to track sex offenders under Megan’s Law could be better used to upgrade the department’s computer system.

When police applied for the grant late in 1997, they anticipated having to identify and monitor 290 sex offenders living in and around the city. But only 22 offenders have been registered, McCrary said. The department’s computers, on the other hand, are not fit to fight off problems associated with the year 2000 bug, he said. City Council members unanimously agreed to transfer the funding.
