American-Islamic Group Sets Annual Fund-Raiser
The Council on American-Islamic Relations of Southern California is expecting about 600 people at its third annual fund-raising banquet this weekend to honor local activists who have contributed to promoting a positive image of Islam and Muslims.
The local honorees include Nahla Abdo of the Healthy Family Community Program and Imam Saadiq Saafir of the Ilm Foundation.
“We are trying to educate our community about becoming politically active,” said Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Orange County. Activism is “a major tool for us to defend our rights. We’re a growing community and we want our voices to be heard.”
The banquet will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Sequoia Conference Center, 7530 Orangethorpe Ave., Buena Park. Tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children over 6.
