* Radio: KXTA (1150).

* The offenses: Oregon State has solo standouts--Ken Simonton is first in the conference and fifth in the nation in rushing, and quarterback Jonathan Smith is second and 18th, respectively, in total offense. Oregon State has team success--it is No. 2 in the country in total offense and No. 9 in passing. But Oregon State does not have an offensive machine. The 31.2-point scoring average is offset by the long list of missed opportunities, such as failing to score three times from inside the 10 and twice from the one last week at Stanford. That’s how the Beavers accumulated 533 yards in offense and 405 in passing but scored only 17 points. They have committed the third-most turnovers in the Pac-10, but today they need not feel so bad. Their opponent has committed the most. UCLA’s passing and running games are under scrutiny because of recent struggles, a problem that has been more long term for the ground attack with the absence of injured DeShaun Foster and the inability of the line. Danny Farmer needs five catches to move into second place on the Bruin career list, but he is questionable because of a strained groin.

* The defenses: UCLA has given up a combined 46 points the last two games, but the offense and the special teams get much of the blame. Of the seven drives that led to scores--discounting the Oregon touchdown on an interception return--five started in Bruin territory and three of those were inside the 30. California and Oregon averaged only 46.3 yards on those seven possessions, and the longest of them all, an 86-yarder last week by the Bears, led only to a field goal. Oregon State’s defense presents a much-needed opportunity for UCLA, after the Bruins were shut out by Cal, and especially for the running game. The Beavers are ninth in the conference in scoring defense and rushing defense. But linebacker Jonathan Jackson is seventh in tackles.

* Key to the game: UCLA’s defense will get spread by Oregon State, by alignment and the versatility of a running and passing attack. The Bruins need to find a way to avoid getting split wide open.
