THE INSIDE TRACK : Morning Briefing : Don’t Call This Tiger Margaret, or Fists Will Fly

Tiger McGregor, a 36-year-old American, boasts of a 3-0 record.

Tiger’s opponent, a 34-year-old from Vancouver, Canada, is 0-2 and hasn’t fought since 1996.

Ordinarily, an upcoming featherweight bout with a payday of $1,500 for each boxer would not rate much attention.

Except for one middling fact: Tiger is a woman.

Margaret McGregor is scheduled to fight Loi Chow on Oct. 9 in Seattle. She got her start by “rassling with the boys.” He isn’t saying much. The promoter, Bob Jarvis, isn’t quite sure how big this Battle of the Sexes will be.

“We just wanted to come up with something to get a little more attention than just your normal fight,” he told Canada’s National Post. “Most girls don’t want to fight guys, but this girl does. I can’t say it’s going to be a big event.

“Is this going to happen all the time? I don’t think so. She’s a tough gal.”

Chasing the dream: After failing to qualify for the U.S. Olympic archery team, actress Geena Davis hasn’t given up on the sport.

She flew to Australia to compete in the International Golden Arrow tournament to get more experience but had the misfortune of drawing Alison Williamson of Britain, the silver-medal winner in the world championship, in the first round.

Williamson won, 160-120, in the 18-arrow alternate shot contest.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be exposed to this amount of stress and level of competition,” Davis said. “I just focus on my technique and not worry about the result.”

King of the road: A six-mile stretch of Interstate 70 is now “Mark McGwire Highway,” named after the St. Louis Cardinal slugger who hit a record 70 home runs last season. The stretch of highway runs past Busch Stadium.

At the end of a statement in which he expressed love for his family and friends, he looked at the warden and said, “Oh, I’d like to say in closing, What about those Cowboys!”

Silent cheering: Sandy Williams, the mother of New Orlean Saint running back Ricky Williams, needed surgery because of a herniated disk in her neck.

Evidently, she aggravated the injury last year when she got overly excited--jumping up in the air--when her son went on his NCAA record-setting run against Texas A&M.;

“I’m going to have to find another way to cheer for Ricky,” she told the Dallas Morning News.
