Volunteers to Raise Funds, Tidy Park

Share

Children and adults will gather Saturday to pick up trash at Chatsworth Park South and, in turn, help raise money for neighboring Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park.

Last year, volunteers carted out a couch, as well as soda cans and beer bottles that were recycled. Organizers hope the cleanup will make an impression on the many young people who are expected to lend a hand.

“It’s nice to hike, but you have a responsibility to keep it clean,” said Kevin Wachs, board member of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Santa Susana Mountains, which is sponsoring the second annual event.

Water, gloves and sunscreen will be provided to participate in the cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m. at Chatsworth Park South, 22360 Devonshire St.

Lunch will be available for $5 and a silent auction will be held, said Lindsay Wilhelm, fund-raising chairwoman for the foundation.

Money will go toward a kiosk with information about 670-acre Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, where Native Americans once performed sacred rituals and stagecoaches carried travelers in the 1800s.

Entertainment will include performances by the bluegrass group Chaparral and singer John Day, a Chumash cultural presentation and a roping workshop.
