Latino Voters
Re “Democrats May Have Lost Latinos,” by Frank del Olmo, Commentary, Aug. 20: If Democrats are losing Latinos it is not just because of indignation at the treatment of Loretta Sanchez and Cruz Bustamante during the convention. A more important reason is that Latino Democrats are beginning to realize that the party’s current leadership will not accommodate traditional Latino abhorrence of abortion and open homosexuality. Even many Latino elected officials are out of sync with their constituents on these issues.
The Democrats can ignore these voters at a convention, but not at the ballot box. Slowly but surely, the Republicans will pull disaffected Latinos into their fold.
