Man, 67, Killed, 6 Injured in Drive-By Shooting Outside Nightclub
Suspected gang members armed with a semiautomatic rifle opened fire from a passing car on a group of people gathered in a parking lot outside a Los Angeles nightclub early Sunday, leaving one dead and six injured, police said.
Los Angeles police said numerous patrons of the nightclub had congregated outside on the 4400 block of Broadway Avenue when the shooting erupted at 1:40 a.m. At least one of those in the parking lot crowd was also armed and returned the fire, according to investigators from the LAPD’s Newton Station.
John Henry Boyakin, 67, suffered numerous gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was uncertain whether Boyakin was shot by people who were standing with him in the parking lot or the people firing from the car, police said.
The motive for the shooting appeared to be gang-related. It may have been in retaliation for a prior incident, police said.
Two males, ages 17 and 19, and a 27-year-old woman were treated for gunshot wounds at County-USC Hospital. Two other men, ages 19 and 22, were treated and released at Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center. A 25-year-old man was treated for a gunshot wound at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
No arrests were made.
Police urged anyone with information about the shootings to contact the Newton Homicide Unit at 323-846-6556.
