Former Teacher Pleads No Contest to Sex With Minor

A former Mira Costa High School English teacher and tennis coach has pleaded no contest to one charge of sex with a minor, ending a case that stirred concern in this community.

Jack Metalsky, 57, of Manhattan Beach, was accused of engaging in sex almost two years ago with a then-senior at the school and member of his tennis team. The girl confided the affair to her best friend; the friend told her mother, who called the principal, according to case investigators.

Under the terms of a plea bargain he accepted Thursday, shortly before he was to go on trial in Los Angeles Superior Court, Metalsky will be on probation for five years, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Wendy Mohammed-Derzaph. He can no longer teach or otherwise associate with minors without court permission and must stay away from the victim, now in college, her mother, and the high school where he taught for 13 years. He also must complete counseling sessions, pay $200 to a victims’ restitution fund and perform 200 hours of community service, Mohammed-Derzaph said. The victim and her mother did not want to testify, nor did they want Metalsky to receive a jail sentence, Mohammed-Derzaph said.
